Incoming Grade 1 students strengthen foundational skills through engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction. In reading, students participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups focused on decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Read-alouds and varied texts help students practice listening, reading fluency, and discussing key ideas. In writing, students learn to plan and organize their ideas across multiple pages while strengthening sentence structure, details, capitalization, and punctuation. Math instruction takes place through hands-on, differentiated centers that reinforce addition, subtraction, skip counting, and number comparisons. Students build confidence by explaining their thinking, exploring multiple strategies, and collaborating to solve problems.
