Walt Disney was always celebrated as a master illustrator, worldwide. Viewing examples from an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art entitled, “Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts,” students will take a look at Disney’s fascination with European art and the use of French motifs in his films, especially “Beauty and the Beast,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Snow White,” and “Fantasia.” Students will draw parallels between the Disney studios’ magical creations and their artistic models, and will produce a series of original cartoon cels, as well as some small sculptures which might inspire a cartoon cel (ex. – a teapot might be inspiration for an animated character as was the case for “Mrs. Potts,” in the film, “Beauty and the Beast”). Students will work at their own paces, sculpting, drawing and painting, in a cheerful, encouraging, atmosphere!
