Description

Students will start off with formulating connections, predictions, and identifying the main idea. We will use the book Holes to scaffold these teaching points as a class novel study. In addition, students will discuss in depth the meaning of the author’s message. Additionally, students will discuss difficult vocabulary, comprehension questions, and character development. All of this will be kept inside of their reading journals to help track their progress and inside of their books with their annotations.
Incoming fifth graders will review how to write a persuasive argument following Lucy Calkins. The students will practice their thinking through verbal debates and using boxes and bullets to help plan their thoughts.
During math time, we will review concepts such as place value up to the hundred millions, different kinds of notations, decimals up to the hundred thousandths, and add and subtract decimals. Students will solve multi-step word problems using money, factors, arrays, divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, multiplication and division property of zero. We will practice the multiplication algorithm up to two by two digit, the division algorithm using various methods up to two digit divisors and three digit dividends, order of operations, fractional values, adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators, and also dive into properties of triangles, angles, and polygons.
