Description

In Reading, students will participate in a novel study. Readers will summarize the story including the setting, characters, important events, problem/solution, and any lessons learned by the characters. Students will describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Readers will immerse themselves into mentor texts to learn how authors use figurative language to ‘paint a picture with words.’

In Writing, authors will write narratives that recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, using words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. Students will work on developing their ideas with details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings. Authors will experiment with figurative language to evoke a sensory experience for the reader. Students will review and edit their writing for appropriate punctuation, capitalization, grammar and spelling.

In Math, students will engage in differentiated groups to develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Lessons, activities, and cooperative math games will connect mathematics to the real world. Students will explore a variety of concepts at their individual level, including, multiplication, division, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, geometry, and fractions. Math fluency will be taught so students can solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with ease, speed, and accuracy.
