Through hands-on, engaging activities and lessons, incoming Kindergarten students will
reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds. They will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to develop their reading skills. Students will continue to work on their fine motor skills using the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. Students in Kindergarten Prep will practice proper letter formation as they work on writing letters, words and sentences with lowercase letters. Our budding writers will also be introduced to Writer’s Workshop and become authors of their own stories. They will have the opportunity to write and illustrate narrative stories as they learn about the routines and expectations of writing time. Learners will also participate in hands-on, differentiated math activities focusing on counting and writing, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. The classroom experience will reinforce and continue to build on the following math strands: number, shape and space, data handling and measurement. Kindergarten Prep also exposes students to different social and emotional experiences such as morning meetings and varied classroom routines. Most importantly, learners will develop new friendships which will give them confidence and a sense of belonging when entering Kindergarten in the fall.
