2nd Grade Academic Prep

Incoming Grade 2 students will participate in small, differentiated reading groups. They will read both fiction and nonfiction texts as they focus on building accuracy to increase fluency and comprehension. Students will review grade-level appropriate phonics skills through a weekly word study focus, as well as more direct phonics instruction in groups as needed to meet each student at their level. Students will build deeper comprehension skills through group discussions and written checks, as they practice summarizing and retelling texts. In Writing, students will receive instruction in both narrative and informational writing. They will work on building their writing stamina as they become more independent authors. Writing lessons will focus on brainstorming, planning, and organization in their writing, as well as language conventions such as punctuation and capitalization. Incoming Grade 2 students will also participate in differentiated math groups where they will review past concepts as well as begin some exposure to Grade 2 concepts. Students will work on building their fact fluency for addition and subtraction facts within 20, review strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers, build place value knowledge, and practice telling time. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers.
